The South Whidbey Community Center, which opened in 2018, has become a hub of creativity and community engagement. As it evolves, so do folks who wish to improve its campus, which served for years as the Langley Middle School.

Marli Jenkins, founder of Woodhaven High School, emailed: “I wanted to share a little bit about another group I’m involved with, the Campus Stewards of the South Whidbey Community Center. One of my fellow stewards, Cynthia Shelton, is a mover and likes to get things done🙌🏽. We think it would be great to bring some awareness to the efforts being made to improve the SWCC campus for our community.”

Cynthia Shelton noted in an email:

“Campus Stewards is a recently formed non-profit organization whose mission is to support the revitalization of the campus and facilities at the South Whidbey Community Center in Langley. June 3 a volunteer work party was held at the Mural courtyard (where the big mural of two children holding a flower together is painted). There is an effort to renovate that area with Joe and MaryLou Whisenand from the Learning Lab being a major force in moving that project forward.

“The dream is big to make this a wonderful community center that everyone in town is proud and grateful to have,” said Cynthia Shelton.
The Stewards’ website notes this mission: to revitalize the Center facilities in ways that support opportunity for our community. Its vision: to support the SWCC vision of creating a connected community that honors diversity, respects history, and offers learning activities responsive to local evolving needs and talents.
