Hello there, it’s only been two days since publishing the last road trip story. Since we’ll be engaged visiting my niece Janelle, husband Kevin and their daughter Lauren the next three days, along with Thanksgiving week with our son Raymo and his partner Gino, I wanted to share yesterday and today with you.

We’re camped at William Heise County Park, about 15 minutes’ drive from the tiny high elevation pie town of Julian CA, which is actually an unincorporated area of San Diego. One night we were the only humans camping in our loop. The temperatures drop into the low 30s at night. Thank goodness for our electric heat. We enjoy the bird life, including raven, crow, Stellar and Scrub jays, turkey, titmouse, chickadee and Acorn woodpecker, whose storage trees hold thousands of acorns in the nearby towering Coulter pines, which resemble closely Ponderosa pines.

Just an hour ago we stopped in at the Julian branch of the San Diego County Library, where we chatted a bit with our friend Liana Moor, before being asked to remain quiet for a TV interview with volunteer Eric Jones. He brought Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program to Julian. ABC’s San Diego affiliate sent a reporter to celebrate the five-year success of the program which delivers 3 million books a month to children, birth to 5 years old in 22 states, as well as Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia. The program celebrates 30 years of inspiring kids to read.

It was our trip to La Jolla Nov. 18 that gave us a day to remember. We bought a pair of senior tickets for $31.99  each to the Birch Aquarium at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The campus is beautiful and on the ocean. If I could go back to school, I’d love to go here and study ocean ecology. It took a bit to convince Bill to agree to visiting a place where wild animals are kept. He wrote in a text to our friends: “I’m not usually a zoo type of person, but the aquarium was really interesting and we saw things I would’ve never seen otherwise.”

What did we see?

A pair of Australian sea dragons captured our attention for a long while
One of the rays sharing the aquarium with Leopard sharks and Giant Sea Bass, which nearly went extinct until 2004

Oh no! Mr. Bill was caught, too by the Great White shark.

Afterwards we drove to Turquoise Bubbles on Turquoise St. in Pacific Beach to do laundry. While our load was washing we walked across the street to The French Gourmet, with its yellow awnings and pastries worthy of the Great British Baking Show French pastries. I enjoyed a GF carrot cake, Bill a puff pastry raisin swirl with a mini pumpkin pie for later. We felt as if we were in a film, running across the wet street in the rain to a romantic French patisserie. Heaven!

So, that’s the story, Morning Glory. Until next time…enjoy the journey–Cactus Kate and Bajada Bill.
