Note: Our friend Kristo O’Donnell asked that we run this story regarding two upcoming concerts with Cafe Impromptu, a popup ensemble of women musicians.
Cafe Impromptu: A place? A band? An event not to be missed!
It was a late night Gypsy jazz jam during DjangoFest NW 2014. Looking around I saw over a dozen women in the group. We sang- played- and got to know one another. These were the inspirations. I decided to create Café Impromptu the next year.
Café Impromptu, is a ‘pop up’ ensemble where female musicians who share an interest in the genre of Django Reinhardt’s music, can play and perform together. Café Impromptu, in its various forms and locations, has continued this tradition every year 2014-2021. It skipped 2020 due to COVID 19 restrictions on social gatherings.
In 2021, nearly 20 women participated in Cafe Impromptu’s outdoor concert days at Double Bluff Brewing Company, Langley WA, during Djangofest NW. The seating was at capacity, with hundreds of music loving on-lookers standing in the back-way alleys of Langley, WA. We represent the “Women in Django” and tell some of the stories of the women of Django Reinhardt during his life time: the mothers, lovers, club owners and business women.
The enthusiasm of the musicians and the audience prompted Kristi to organize a formal band for a performance on April 23, 2022.

they do now have a ‘vaccinated only’ policy at Blooms that hence, does not allow for many folk to attend.
Ah, that can be tricky.
